Dagaz means light or day and primarily represents midday and the summer solstice, when the light is at its peak. At this precise moment, the power of the light is strongest.
Dagaz brings a message of awakening and clarity, but also of transformation. It symbolizes the moment of awakening, where a mystical period begins during which all oppositions, like life and death or darkness and light, become one. Dagaz embodies the balance between day and night and represents the beginning of the day.
It symbolizes reflection, action, and above all, the understanding that polarity and contradictions are necessary patterns for human thought. The person seeking guidance can expect a message, perhaps a new beginning.
Light is never negative; it can only be interpreted positively. The Dagaz rune is often used as a powerful rune of protection, drawn on doors and windows. Thus, only good things can enter, while darkness stays outside. Dagaz therefore protects against negative influences. Light also represents growth, success, and progress.
The symbol of the Dagaz rune resembles a lying hourglass. All the corners are connected; everything is linked. Life is a constant change that never stops. Even what seems opposed is actually interconnected. When one chapter ends, another begins. Night gives way to day, and day to night. Everything comes and goes in an endless cycle.
The symbolism of light is widespread and often associated with enlightenment, awakening. We recognize the world; we see it for the first time with different eyes. A path traveled by Jesus and Buddha—the path to a higher being. Light brings clarity and dispels darkness.
This state is comparable to a mystical moment, a purifying fire. Just as Eve accessed knowledge through the apple, light will bring us knowledge. However, Dagaz also embodies plurality in life, combining opposing concepts: Yin and Yang, day and night, man and woman. It symbolizes the middle way.
It is important to show a lot of gratitude towards Dagaz and not take it for granted. It is only in consciously perceiving this gift that it will stay with us. If abused, it can be taken away from us. Thus, it is essential to adopt a loving and respectful attitude towards this gift. This gift is ultimately only lent and lasts only if we take care of it and fully appreciate it.
Awakening by Dagaz does not come to us simply. We must work concretely to achieve it. For example, a flower cannot grow if we do not plant the seed, water it, or maintain it regularly. If we want something, we must work for it.
Dagaz indicates that it is time to act. The moment has come to get moving and work towards a goal. In life, things rarely fall from the sky. The path to the goal may be arduous and fraught with obstacles. It is then essential to persevere and not to give up.
Even if one feels like Sisyphus, laboriously rolling the stone up the mountain only to see it roll down again and again. One must not be discouraged by these difficulties and never lose faith and hope.
Especially when going through a period of transition, patience can be severely tested. But Dagaz stands by our side and shows us that this state is not permanent, that the first rays of light are starting to peek over the horizon.
One should not give up so close to the goal. Find the right balance between acting and waiting. Do not force things, but also do not abstain from trying. By persevering, the blockade will break. And once the barrier is broken, the concentrated energy can flow freely. From that moment, the next steps will be enormous, and the goal within reach.
The Dagaz rune has no reversed interpretation, as there are no negative aspects of light. Dagaz shows progress. It may sometimes take time and seem invisible from the outside, but it is there: slow and steady. One progresses and surpasses oneself.
A new day begins - a new start is imminent. With this rune, we gain hope and optimism. We believe that everything will develop for the better. In association with other runes, more precise meanings may appear. If Dagaz is surrounded by negative runes, it indicates inner strength. The person does not let themselves be brought down despite unfavorable external circumstances.
This strength helps us get through difficult periods. If Dagaz is accompanied by Mannaz, help can come not only from ourselves but also from another person. It shows us that we do not have to go through this period alone and that someone is by our side. If a reversed Wunjo, a reversed Othila, or Hagalaz appear, we must reflect on the reasons we have these problems in our lives.
Is it possible that we cling to them and insist on having problems out of fear that our life will become boring? There is only one remedy: change our attitude and approach life with more optimism. Dagaz is a bridge. It connects us to our inner being and also to the people around us. No other bridge can harmoniously connect opposites and equals alike.
Dagaz cannot be reversed and remains fixed.
